Educational Design for K-12 and Higher Education

Whether it’s a neighborhood K-12 school, or a world-class research lab on a college campus, the way educational spaces are designed deeply impacts the student experience. This page features films we produced for the global education design group of Arcadis (formerly IBI Group). Each of these innovative and award-winning projects highlight the commitment by designers and educators to create spaces that become hubs of learning, innovation, and collaboration.

Roy Sprague Jr., AIA Middle School, Cypress, TX

Sprague Middle School completes the Bridgeland Educational Village, a multi-school site that locates an elementary, middle and high school on the same campus grounds. In designing the new middle school, architects from the Houston office of Arcadis partnered with leaders from the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (ISD) to create a facility featuring collaborative flex spaces, a centrally located library, and opportunities to connect the elementary and the middle school through the main cafeteria.

This story both highlights key design features of Sprague Middle School, and illustrates the Educational Village concept in action.

College of Human Ecology Building, Cornell University

Designed to encourage inspiration, collaboration and creativity, the 89,000 square-foot Cornell College of Human Ecology Building features specialized labs, shared spaces for interdisciplinary research, modern classrooms, studios and galleries. The building is Cornell’s first LEED Platinum certified facility on campus.

An important chapter of this story featured the collaboration between a team of the College’s interior design students and the architects from Gruzen-Samton IBI Group in designing the building’s new community space.

Science and Innovation Campus at Maindy Road, Cardiff University, UK

The Haydn Ellis Building and Cardiff University Brain Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) bring together experts in conditions such as neuroscience, mental health, stem cell cancer, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases in one holistic environment. Architects from Cardiff Arcadis (formerly IBI Nightingale) worked closely with University researchers to design labs, classrooms and public areas that encourage collaboration, promote sustainability and engage the community. The result: a world-leading research center designed to break down academic silos and create opportunities for multidisciplinary research to find cures to benefit mankind.

Dr. Kirk Lewis Career and Technical High School, Pasadena, TX

Dr. Kirk Lewis Career and Technical High School (CTHS) prepares students for both college and the workforce through traditional academic courses and specialized career training. In designing the school, architects from Texas Arcadis created flexible spaces for school and community events. Additional design features included state-of-the-art lab and classroom spaces, as well as high-quality, custom wall graphics to brand different career academy locations, provide wayfinding, and make the corridors "cool" and engaging for students.

The design story of CTHS combines flexibility, adaptability, and innovative thinking to create a 21st century learning environment that honors the dignity of work.
